Variable fonts appear "thin" by default even though a different weight is (or at least should) be defined.

Hovering over the menu items briefly changes the font size to bold, and then back to thin.

Safari 16.5 is the lowest version supported by Vegvisir so it's a good idea to have that be the lowest version for vlw.se too.
